Ashenden (Audible Audio Edition) Elizabeth Wilhide Carole Boyd Audible Studios Books

Spring, 2010. When Charlie and Ros inherit Ashenden from their aunt Reggie, a decision must be made. The beautiful 18th-century house, set in acres of English countryside, is in need of serious repair. Do they try to keep it in the family, or will they have to sell?
Moving back in time, in an interwoven narrative spanning two and a half centuries, we witness the house from its beginnings through to the present day. Along the way we meet those who have built the house, lived in it and loved it; those who have worked in it; and those who would subvert it to their own ends. There is Mrs Trimble, housekeeper to the rackety, spendthrift Mores; the wealthy Henderson family, in their Victorian heyday; six-year-old Pudge; Walter Beckmann, prisoner in its grounds; and Reggie and Hugo, agents of its postwar revival. Through good times and bad, the better we get to know the house, the more we care about its survival.

(3.5 stars) Charlie and Ros have just found out that they have inherited their aunt’s English country estate, Ashenden. Charlie flies over from New York to help his sister decide what they should do with the property. While Ros would like to keep it in the family, Charlie does not see how it would be possible with the extensive repairs and maintenance that the property needs. As they ponder options, the book goes back in time to the original owner of the property, telling the stories of the house and its occupants over time up to the present day where a difficult decision lies ahead for Charlie and Ros. This was a great way to cover a large historical period with the house as an anchor. It reminded me of “The Girl in Hyacinth Blue” which took a similar approach with a painting.Product details

Ashenden (Audible Audio Edition) Elizabeth Wilhide Carole Boyd Audible Studios Books Reviews
Enjoyed this history of a house, from its building to current owners. Well done and held my interest throughout the reading
A house designed to be art becomes a needy mistress to each of its owners as they struggle to keep up with the demands of its beauty, decorating it, furnishing it, finding art to grace its walls and halls. And yet all the while, the house needs more -- maintenance, refurbishing, gardening. This is a lovely take of how this house takes its owners as lovers, rewarding them with a home that feels like a corner of heaven, all the while draining their financial resources.
The storyline takes pieces of each generation's owners' lives and shows their rise and fall. Sometimes the transitions from one generation the next are a bit jarring, but the book as a whole is beautifully constructed -- I look forward to more contributions from Elizabeth Wilhide.
I loved this book. It was more about the house and how the people who owned it affected it then about the people. I loved how it all tied together although there were a few people I would have liked to know what happened to them in the end.
I thought I would enjoy this book more since I like historical novels.
The characters were too difficult to remember as the years passed. There were only a few characters who were memorable, but then there was only a brief chapter including them.
The title makes the book sound as though this is a book of a family and how they evolved over the centuries, but it's not.
At times I thought I would just stop reading it, but I continued to the end. I didn't end feeling as though it was a great read.
A very well written story of the families that lived in this house over centuries. I loved the description (made pictures in your mind!) and the well developed characters. I also enjoyed the historical facts about old England that were woven into the tales. Obviously a well researched book.
I had somehow a different expectation, but was not disappointed by the book. Although the framing of the main story felt a little stilted I understood the motivation. Although I could as well have just read about the history of the house by itself.
But Elizabeth Wilhide managed to pull the years together, some suspense was always a motivation to want to know more, to read on.
The conclusion was somewhat expected.
Readers with an fascination for English Manor houses and history will be interested and satisfied. A good read.
I love books about houses, I really do. But this one missed the boat. It was slow and nothing happened after the first chapter that made me want to continue reading. There was too much detail about rocks, soil, characters who disappeared in the next chapter. It just didn't move. If there had been more action and less description, I would have kept on with it. Also, with the terms the author used I couldn't get a picture of what Ashenden looked like. A builder of houses would appreciate all the descriptions, but I thought it would be more about the people who lived there. Each chapter which brought the story forward was too short to get to know and care about the characters, and since it was time-skipping, they weren't heard from again. I went thru every page all the way to the end of the book and mostly it was page after page of discriptive text and little dialogue.
